Universal Robots eyes Indian market for future growth plans

- SUPRIYA KUMARASWAMY

While the fear among people of loosing their jobs to robots is rising worldwide, Denmark-based Universal Robots suggests the two can work hand-inhand for higher productivity of the Indian market.

“The Indian market needs Cobots to achieve higher productivity without replacing workers in factories but working alongside them.

It will eliminate timeconsuming, monotonous or potentially unsafe activities done by workers in factories,” said Esben H. Østergaard , Chief Technology Officer and the co-founder of Universal Robots.

“By introducing robotics in the manufacturing and automation industry, Indian companies can achieve efficient mass production with minimal room for common errors,” he added.

UR’s collaborative robots or Cobots are developed to combine the abilities of people and machines. The robots cater to the need of manufacturing, packaging and automobile industry.

Mr Østergaard explained, “Cobots act as a multi-functional tool i.e. a screwdriver, packaging device, palletizer, gluing application or just a ‘helping hand’ which will empower the employees further.”

Østergaard believes India has been slow to adopt robotics and uses time-consuming and laborious processes. According to the International Federation of Robotics, India imports over 2500 robots every year.

“The Indian manufacturing industry needs to look closely at these new technologies and make the right investments, especially in robotics to ensure better productivity and products,” said Mr. Østergaard. The company looks forward to take
