Rape survivor denied school admission

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has shot a notice to the education department after a private school allegedly denied admission to a minor rape survivor. The gross insensitivity came to light when the parents of the rape survivor, a student of class X, seeking admission in XI was turned away by the school. Parents of the rape survivor have alleged that a private school where the girl was studying, asked them not to send her ward to the school as it would “tarnish” the name of the school.

In their accusation, the parents said that the school has laid a condition that the survivor will be promoted to class 11 only if she stops coming to school. The school administration feels that the name of their school will be spoiled if the victim

The girl was kidnapped, raped and then thrown out of a moving car. Parents of the victim have approached the Delhi Commission for Women for help.

The DCW has immediately issued a notice to the education department in this matter. The parents informed DCW that the school has refused her the option of using the school bus service that was earlier being availed by the girl. They said that now, they have to pick up and drop off their daughter. They also have accused the school principal of asking them to remove their daughter from this school and enrol her in a new school, as the girl is bringing bad name to the school. The principal has forbidden her friends from sitting next to her. The parents have alleged that the school administration is harassing the girl in various manners so that she quits on her own. The Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Jaihind said that this is a very serious matter. The girl is being punished for no fault of hers and it is a very embarrassing and unacceptable matter in today’s world. The DCW has issued a notice to the education department in this matter and has asked for a report within 5 days. She said that if need be strict action will be taken to get justice for the girl.
