Paralysed senior citizen treated successfully

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

A senior citizen, who was rendered paralysed on the left side of his body last year, was rehabilitated and his bodily movements were brought back to normalcy.

The 70-year-old professor had suffered a stroke after which he suddenly developed numbness and weakness on the left side of his body followed by loss of consciousness. This resulted in severe limitations for him in the form of restriction in his mobility, inability to go about his daily chores as compared to earlier, and an increased dependence on his family members for every little thing.

Doctors at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC), Vasant Kunj, conducted a neurological assessment to diagnose his underlying conditions to formulate a neuro-therapy based rehab protocol for further treatment.

“When Mr Kumar first visited our hospital, the left side of his body was completely paralysed, and his restricted mobility had adversely impacted the quality of his life in multiple ways. We conducted a complete clinical neuro assessment and found that his cognitive (related to reasoning, memory, attention, etc.) functioning was intact. He was unable to turn his body, lie down or even sit and stand on his own.

“Also, he had become completely dependent on others for his day-to-day activities such as eating, dressing, bathing and using the toilet,” said Dr Chitra Kataria, the rehabilitation head of ISIC, New Delhi.

Doctors at the hospital recommended an advancelevel personalised rehabilitation treatment programme to help the patient regain health and speedy covery.
