In the history of fashion, polka dots remain a classic. It is one of the most eyecatching prints and has often caught the fancy of many designers, especially for women and kids wear. What may not immediately come to mind though is it’s use as a tasteful print for men.

Coming to think of it, if you rewind, polka dots were used extensively during the 1970s. Actors including Rajesh Khanna and Rishi Kapoor carried the print with panache and had the ladies giving it a thumbs up. In the recent lot, with celebrities like Ranveer Singh and Sushant Singh Rajput donning the print, it looks like the trendy dots are ready to make a comeback.

“It’s a cool print to wear,” says celebrity stylist Nitasha Gaurav and adds, “The common belief that polka dots are only for kids or women, is not correct. One can wear polka dot-printed shirt or a jacket, if you want to keep it low. A tie, scarf or bow tie is a safe bet too. If you are willing to experiment, a pair of polka dotted pants goes well with a plain shirt and a polka dotted tie. But if you are conservative, don’t opt for bright colours, but instead choose soft tones like grey and white. If you are bold, a head-to-toe polka dot look, like how Ranveer carried it some time back, isn’t a bad idea.”

However, stylist Rick Roy feels that one should sport a head-to-toe polka dot look only if they are very confident about it, or else it may prove to be a complete fashion disaster. “Polka dot head-totoe is a bad idea anyway. But, one can sport polka dotted shoes, because they would look really stylish. However, in my opinion, polka dots are a big out. They were in trend a couple of years back and they may make a comeback three to four years later, but not now,” says Rick.
