Chawrasia funds junior event at home club

The tournament, which had 19 categories —10 for boys and nine for girls — as well as future ones will be organised in associatio­n with Ultimate Golf Junior Tour

Two-time Indian Open winner, S.S.P. Chawrasia, took the first step in terms of “giving back to the game” by sponsoring a junior golf challenge, which saw more than 100 children turn up in various age categories at his home course, the Royal Calcutta Golf Club on Friday.

The 36-year-old, a six-time winner on Asian Tour and four-time European Tour winner, was present at the venue to motivate the youngsters as he created a platform for the juniors to showcase their talent.

“This is my first step in trying to grow the game and create future Olympians and champions,” said Chawrasia, a selftaught golfer. This tournament, as well as future ones will be organised in associatio­n with Ultimate Golf Junior Tour.

The tournament had 19 categories, 10 for boys and nine for girls. From among the winners two juniors get a chance to represent the country at the Ciputra World Junior Golf Championsh­ip, Jakarta, from June 6 to 9. Chawrasia has offered to sponsor air-tickets for four winners of the season ending finale.

“The Milkha Junior Golf Championsh­ip” scheduled in Chandigarh in the fourth week of May. The winners of the finale get an opportunit­y to represent the nation in the US Kids World & Teen World Championsh­ip at Pinehurst in North Caroline.

Chawrasia added, “Junior golfers are the future of the game and the future of golf is in bright hands. Golf is no more only for the rich and is now more accessible for youngsters starting out early. The Ultimate Junior Tour is a great platform to nourish of young talent across India.”
