The CBI on Monday filed a chargesheet against the husband and mother-in-law of national-level shooter Tara Sahdev for allegedly forcing her to convert to Islam.

In its chargesheet filed at a CBI court in Ranchi, the agency has also slapped charges of rape against her husband. The CBI has charged Sahdev’s husband Ranjit Singh Kohli alias Raqibul Hasan, her mother-in-law Kaushal Rani, and the then registrar, vigilance, Jharkhand high court Mushtaque Ahmed (currently under suspension) for alleged criminal conspiracy, dowry, among others.

Sahdev got married to Kohli on July 7, 2014. The national-level shooter (23) had alleged that she was tortured to convert to Islam. Sahdev had earlier claimed that Ranjit had concealed his religion before their marriage. The agency has charged Ahmed with eveteasing and pressuring Tara’s family to get her married to Hasan.

The CBI had registered three cases against the in-laws of Tara on the directions of Jharkhand high court. Tara had also alleged that her mother-in-law and spouse forced her to convert, warned her not to share her experience with anybody, and kept her hostage in their home. After a month’s captivity, she finally managed to escape. She was brutally tortured by her in-laws, she had alleged. The CBI had registered three cases against husband and his family members. Sources said that the first case was related to harassment and cruelty against Tara by accused husband and others. “First case had been registered under sections of IPC related to dowry harassment against her husband, second related to alleged cheating and forgery against Kohli,” sources said.
