3 held for `65L Malviya Nagar jewellery heist

A broken number plate and a CCTV grab helped the Delhi police crack a daylight heist which took place at a jewellery shop in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on June 15. The police has arrested three robbers allegedly involved in the crime.

A group of five men, wearing helmets and carrying firearms and meat choppers, allegedly barged into Pramod Jain’s jewellery shop and fled with valuables worth over `65 lakh. While leaving, they also took away Mr Jain’s cellphone.

Analyses footage obtained from CCTV cameras installed near the shop revealed that there were five accused on two motorcycle­s. The registrati­on numbers of the motorcycle­s were also retrieved.

One motorcycle had a registrati­on number of Jyotiba Phule Nagar (Amroha) in western Uttar Pradesh. A team was sent to Amroha and it was found that the registrati­on number plate was forged, said deputy commission­er of police (south) Ishwar Singh.

The second motorcycle was found to have been stolen from Jamia Nagar in southeast Delhi on June 11.

A man was nabbed while cleaning the motorcycle in a narrow lane in Jamia Nagar this morning. He was identified as Azeem (26).

He led the police to two other accused — Dilshad Mohammad (26) and Saurabh Verma (24) — who were arrested from a house in Shaheen Bagh.

After celebratin­g Id, Dilshad and Azeem returned to Delhi and were arrested.

Two firearms with six live cartridges, one sharpedged weapon, and some gold and diamond jewellery items were recovered from them. The accused had carried out a recce for about half an hour before the heist. After robbery, they took a congested inner lane route to escape.
