Pregnancy, sex and safety

- DR NARAYANA REDDY

QMy 24-year-old wife had a miscarriage, 16 months back. Now, she is pregnant again and carrying 5 months of pregnancy. At the end of the second month, she had a low-lying placenta, which is normal now. I just wanted your advice on whether it safe to have sex with my her or not?

I caution you against having sex with your wife. She has a history of previous miscarriage and the placenta is positioned near the cervical opening.

In both these conditions, sexual intercourse is fraught with risks. You may check with your obstetrician.

QI am a 26-year-old woman and had unprotected sex about 20-25 days back. Now, last week, just 2-3 days before my periods, I took an I-Pill. After a week, I went for a pregnancy test and the report came positive. Will the I-pill have any side effect on my baby? Also, will it be safe to continue with the pregnancy or not?

The Emergency Contraceptive Pill should be taken within 72 hours of an unprotected sexual intercourse. The earlier the better. Otherwise, it’s effectiveness gets reduced. Since your pregnancy is within the 12 week period you may undergo medical termination of pregnancy through ‘suction method’.

Most Hospitals have this facility. In general, the contraceptive pill has practically no adverse effects on the fetus.
