WOULD SANJAY DUTT HAVE TO GO TO JAIL AGAIN?

- SUBHASH K. JHA

With the honourable Supreme Court asking for an explanation from the Maharashtra government, as to why Sanjay Dutt spent considerably less time in jail as compared to his stipulated prison term, Sanjay could well return to jail to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Expert legal opinion says it would all depend on the honourable Supreme Court’s decision, as to whether Sanjay had served sufficient prison time. However, BJP’s spokesperson Shaina NC says the Maharashtra government owes no explanation. “It is the prison authorities who give recommendations for a prisoner’s good conduct to the D.G. of prisons. The Maharashtra government does not interfere in this matter.”

However, this is a peculiar circumstance, and Shaina says the Maharashtra government is seeking legal advice. “Since the Supreme Court has questioned the Maharashtra government, the government will seek legal action based on the merits on the case.”

Meanwhile, sources say Sanjay and his legal team are not excessively worried. A close friend of Sanjay says the actor has become impervious to setbacks. “He has seen so much pain that he doesn’t react to bad news. He thinks it is karma. This new problem is not discussed in the Dutt residence. Manyata and the twins are holidaying, and Sanjay is working hard. No one talks about prison.”

In the interim, Sanjay’s biopic maker Raj Kumar Hirani may alter his narrative by the new developments. But team Dutt is confident there won’t be a need to do so.
