2 arrested for killing murder case witness

New Delhi, July 25: Two men, including one carrying a reward of `25,000 on his head and who was allegedly involved in the killing of an eyewitness in a murder case, were arrested here, the police said today.

Sonu alias Chanu Baba (24) and Shankar (23) were arrested Monday evening from Rohini, said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell).

On May 5, Rattan Lal (65) was shot dead inside his shop in Rohini by two armed assailants.

Lal was a key witness in his son Gaurav’s murder case, said the DCP.

Gaurav was allegedly killed last year by a man named Manjeet and to weaken the trial of the case, the latter had allegedly hired contract killers for Rs two lakh to eliminate Lal, who was provided with a security cover by the Delhi police.

On the basis of CCTV footage and other clues, it was found that Lal was killed by Himmat and Sonu, two contract killers of the Sunil alias Tillu gang, added the officer.

On Monday, the special cell of the Delhi police received a tip-off that the members of the gang would come to Sector 11,

In the last few months, Sonu was involved in "eliminating" the facilitators of Tillu’s rival gang, headed by Jitender alias Gogi of Alipur

Earlier, Sonu was had cases against him for carjacking, murder and robbery

Rohini in a car to meet someone, he said.

When the police intercepted the car, the two occupants in it — Sonu and Shankar — took out their weapons and the former pointed a pistol towards the policemen, the DCP said, adding that however, the accused were overpowered by the men in uniform.

Both the accused were arrested and two semiautomatic pistols and seven live cartridges were seized from their possession, along with their car.

In the last few months, Sonu was involved in “eliminating” members of Tillu’s rival gang, headed by Jitender alias Gogi of Alipur. Earlier, he was also involved in cases of carjacking, murder, robbery etc, the DCP said.
