Bhopal: An accused in the Vyapam scam, Praveen Dubey, “committed suicide” in his house in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district, the police said. 48 others involved in the scandal have died under mysterious circumstances so far.

An accused in Vyapam scam, involving rigging of examinations held for admission in medical colleges and recruitments in government services in Madhya Pradesh, “committed” suicide by hanging in his house in Morena district in the state, police said on Wednesday.

The deceased, Praveen Dubey, a resident of Morena, was accused of taking admission in a medical college in Jabalpur in MP in 2008 by adopting unfair means. He was found hanging in his house on Monday night, his family members said.

According to his family members, Dubey, who was running an oil mill in his hometown after being rusticated from the college, following an FIR against him in this connection in 2012, was upset over his ordeal of shuttling between Morena and Jabalpur frequently to attend the hearing of his case in the court. Trial in his case was going on in Jabalpur court. Besides, he was worried over recent setbacks in his business, they said.

“He had gone into depression two days before he committed suicide and stopped interacting with others. He was found hanging in his room late on Monday night,” his family said.

Vyapam (Vyavasayik Pariksha Mandal) or Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) shot into limelight after massive corruption in admissions in medical colleges and recruitments in government services was unearthed in 2010.
