- AMITA VERMA

The Bhim Army has threatened to launch a major agitation after their chief Chandrashekhar, who reportedly fuelled caste clashes in Saharanpur two months ago, was allegedly assaulted inside the jail.

The office-bearers of the Bhim Army gheraoed the office of the district magistrate and staged a demonstration in protest against the attack on their leader. Also, they submitted a memorandum to the district officials and demanded necessary action along with an investigation into the incident. They have sought an early resolution of the issue and warned of launching a stir if their demands were not met.

The mother of Bhim Army’s district unit president, Kamal Walia, said if “innocent people” of the dalit outfit were attacked, they would no longer sit silently. Chandrashekhar, a lawyer by profession, was arrested on June 8 by Uttar Pradesh police from Himachal Pradesh’s Dalhousie in connection with his alleged role in the violence in Saharanpur

Jail superintendent of the Saharanpur district jail, Viresh Sharma, however, denied the incident and said that Chandrashekhar had been kept in a quarantine barrack that did not have other inmates.

Chandrashekhar, a lawyer by profession, was arrested on June 8 by the special task force of Uttar Pradesh police from Himachal Pradesh’s Dalhousie in connection with his alleged role in the violence in Saharanpur.

He had shot to limelight after holding a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi against violence on Dalits in Saharanpur.

The Bhim Army, shot to fame in May this year when it provoked caste clashes in Saharanpur in which three people were killed and a dozen of cops was left injured.

Earlier, two members of the Bhim Army were arrested by the police in connection with the violence.
