Hackers use Chinese software to loot ATMs

The cyber cell of Madhya Pradesh police has cracked a high-tech theft case in which hackers had broken into three ATMS in district headquarters town of Gwalior last year by arresting a youth.

Shahid Qureshi, picked up by cyber cell sleuths, has revealed that Chinese software was used to hack the three ATMs to withdraw money.

Shahid was arrested following interrogation of one Ajey Choudhury, the alleged kingpin of the ATM theft gang active in at least five states in the country.

The alleged mastermind in the high-tech theft case was currently lodged in the jail in Bhubaneswar.

“A cyber cell team of the MP police visited Bhubaneswar jail to interrogate Ajey Choudhury. Ajey tipped off on Shahid’s involvement in the theft in Gwalior on April 2, 2016”, a senior police officer of the cyber cell told this newspaper on Monday.

Ajey’s gang was alleged involved in breaking into ATMs MP, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Karnataka, he added.

Ajey hailed from Rudrapur in Uttarakhand. The gang used to do recce on ATMs without guards.

Later, two hackers were dispatched to such an ATM. One of them used to hack the ATM by uploading malware in its kiosk panel to snap its link with the server of the bank concerned. The machine was then taken to remote using command to withdraw money.
