Cyber crime is on the rise in the national capital and it has given the cops sleepless nights. In fresh incidents, two cases related to attempted password hack were lodged with the city's cyber cell wing. In the first incident, a multinational bank has alleged unauthorised IPIN (password) reset attempt of its Internet banking customers by unknown persons. The bank has said that malicious users were trying to steal the information of its customers.

"Multiple unauthorised one time password (OTP)based SMS alerts to bank's Internet banking customers for IPIN (passwords) reset attempts were performed by the hackers. It all happened between 30 May and 3 June. The bank received a number of complaints from the customers. Most of the customers were NRIs," the bank said in the complaint.

A senior police official said that Harshkant Sharma, the assistant vice-president (risk intelligence and control) of the HDFC bank, lodged a case in this respect.

The official privy to the investigation said that the NRI customers received SMS on their mobile numbers registered with the bank asking them to reset IPIN.

"All malicious activities were performed using the same IP address. These NRI customers of the bank have accounts in Delhi and NCR. The investigation revealed that the hackers stole their information, but did not know the IPIN. So they attempted to reset it by clicking on 'forgot IPIN,'" the official said.

The hackers also sent out emails to the customers in order to hack their information and passwords.
