2 men on bike crushed by truck in S. Delhi

-

On the second consecutive day, two more people were killed in a road accident in South Delhi. A speeding dumper truck ran over two bikers and dragged them for few metres, leaving one of them severed into three pieces and the other with critical injuries in Mehrauli area. The errant driver is currently absconding while the truck has been seized.

A team of police reached the spot and found two men lying in a pool of blood. They were immediately taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where both were declared brought dead. The deceased have been identified as Umesh Sharma, who worked as a chef in a local restaurant and hailed from Uttarakhand, and Sanjay.

“Umesh was riding pillion and Sanjay was driving the bike when their vehicle was hit by the speeding dumper. Umesh was crushed under the wheels of the dumper,” said a relative of Umesh.

A cab driver, Shameem, was an eyewitness to the accident and narrated the entire sequence to the police. He was passing through the same stretch and was on his way from Saket to Chhatarpur Extension to drop a passenger when the accident took place.

According to him, it was around 11.15 pm on August 5 when a speeding truck hit his vehicle from the side and the car climbed on to a road divider. This caused Shameem to fall onto the next seat.

As he got down the divider, he saw that the same truck had hit a motor cycle as well and kept dragging the vehicle and the two men riding it for some distance. The victims sustained injuries due to the wear and the weight of the vehicle crushing them.

By the time the truck came to a halt, Shameem saw that one of the men was profusely bleeding and appeared to be in immense pain while the other had been severed into three pieces.

Shameem himself sustained injuries in the accident.

“The driver got down from the truck and tried to run. We were not in a state to chase him,” said Shameem, who then made a call to the police control room.
