Bose sings national anthem in LS, calls for end to hatred

- AGE CORRESPONDENT

New Delhi: TMC MP Sugata Bose said in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, if he actually wants all evils to quit India by 2022, should “stop the engines of coercion in their tracks” and unambiguously condemn and take stronger action against those who are “spreading hatred”.

Participating in a special discussion to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement, Mr Bose quoted from the national anthem, and sang a few of its verses. A part of the battle for the soul of India will be fought in the realm of ideas not in the trenches of party politics, an emotionally charged Mr Bose said.

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday did not transact any business after a special discussion to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement and adjourned for the day at around 1.20 pm after paying tributes to sitting BJP member Sanwar Lal Jat, who died early on Wednesday morning.

Soon after the Lok Sabha adopted a resolution to protect democratic values, promote harmony and patriotism and rid the country of corruption, after the end of a two-and-a-half hour long discussion on the Quit India Movement, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan informed the House about the demise of Jat.

She recalled Jat’s role as a former minister in the Narendra Modi government, before adjourning the House for the day.

The former Union minister and BJP MP from Ajmer, Sanwar Lal Jat died here of cardiac arrest aged 62, a top official at the AIIMS said.

Mr Jat, who served earlier as minister of state for water resources in the Narendra Modi government, died at 6.15 am, AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria said.

The BJP MP had collapsed during a meeting at Jaipur in July.
