Display screens in next 4 yrs: Minister

New Delhi, Aug. 11: Display screens will come up at various stations in a phased manner in the next four years under Railway Display Network (RDN) project to communicat­e with passengers and provide infotainme­nt, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, minister of state for railways Rajen Gohain said the railways proposes to install display screens at foot-over bridges, platforms, waiting rooms at stations under RDN project. “RDN is envisaged to become a unique medium of communicat­ion with passengers which will not only provide necessary informatio­n and social messages to the passengers but will also become a medium of enriched infotainme­nt,” he said.

The roll-out of the RDN system at various designated stations is expected to be done in a phased manner, Mr Gohain said, adding 500 such screens have already been installed at 16 railway stations.

The screens will display informatio­n related to arrival, departure, running status of trains and other passenger related informatio­n round the clock. It will keep passenger informed about amenities, comfort, convenienc­e and safety features available at the station and also display emergency messages on SOS basis and messages related to disaster management. “RDN is planned to be built and operated on a self-sustainabl­e model with no capital investment by Indian railways,” added Mr Gohain.
