After a week-long hunt, the Delhi police has recovered a police Gypsy stolen from a parking lot in Tughlakabad on Wednesday.

The police Gypsy, that was a part of the Quick Reaction Team (QRT), was reportedly stolen on August 7 from Kotla Mubarakpur police station.

Ajay, alias Adesh, was arrested with the help of technical and human surveillance, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Romil Baaniya said that the Gypsy was recovered on Monday night.

“The vehicle was spotted concealed in Tughlaqabad village when staff of Govindpuri police station were patrolling ahead of Independence Day,” he said, adding that the accused wasn’t found on the same day.

The police has recovered two more vehicles on his instance.

The vehicle thief wanted to modify the Gypsy and use it as an adventure vehicle on road trips, added Mr Baaniya.

Its driver had parked it in Kotla Mubarakpur village after duty on August 5 to find it missing the next morning. With Independence Day celebrations just days later, the police had launched a massive hunt to recover the car. “We got inputs regarding stolen cars parked at a parking lot on Tughlaqabad. When a police team raided the premises, they found the stolen police Gypsy among one of the stolen cars,” said a police official.

One of the accused, Ajay, lives in a jhuggi in New Delhi’s Tughlaq Lane.
