To ascertain the real owners of brothels on GB road, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Thursday served summons to as many as 125 ‘brothel owners’. Officials said the summons were pasted outside the brothels when the owners refused to accept them. The owners were served summons requiring their personal appearance before the comission between September 21 and 24.

As per a DCW statement, “They have been summoned to appear before the DCW along with their original identity proofs and address proofs.” It added, that “A commission team led by

DCW chairperson Swati Jaihind said, “This gory business has been going on a mere 3 km away from Parliament and there is no doubt that there is active connivance of system. These are initial steps taken by the commission in its pursuit to ensure closure of the brothels at GB Road.”

“Till date, the real owners of these brothels have not been caught and only sometimes are the brothel managers arrested by the police. Due to this lack of action, there has been no deterrent and exploitation of girls continues unabated. The DCW aims to end prostitution in the area (GB road) by working towards ascertaining the identities of real brothel owners, demolishing illegal structures and rehabilitating the sex workers,” the statement added. The commission had earlier constituted a committee under the chairpersonship of DCW chairperson Swati Jaihind, comprising senior officials of Delhi police, North MCD, district magistrate, Delhi Jal Board, BSES, fire department and representatives of select NGOs. The details of brothel owners were received from different authorities after issuing summons.
