ASUS Zenfone AR: A phone much ahead of its time

- FRANCIS D’SA

After Google announced its big entry into Augmented Reality (AR), Tango was the keyword and AR soon took off. Lenovo was the first smartphone to take advantage of AR and ASUS followed suit with a seasoned smartphone, catering to Tango and Daydream together.

The Zenfone AR is a flagship handset with an aluminium frame and a soft, black leather rear panel. It sports three sensors in its camera, housing a 23MP primary camera, a depth sensor and a motion tracking sensor, along with a dual LED flash and an IR laser. The motion tracking sensor tracks its location as it moves through space, the depth sensing camera with an infrared (IR) projector measures its distance from real-world objects, while the 23MP camera lets you view virtual objects in your actual surroundings in detail. The 23MP sensor uses a 4-axis optical image stabilizer and a 3-axis electronic image stabilizer, along with given phase-detection autofocus to get great quality photos.

ASUS has crammed in a 5.7-inch 2K Super AMOLED panel that produces bright and vibrant pictures along with good viewing angles. Under the hood, the Snapdragon 821 processor coupled with an 8GB RAM and 128GB storage. The Zenfone AR can take a beating with almost any application that you can throw at it. High-end games run flawlessly, the user interface is slick, multi-tasking is a breeze and you will never find stuttering while using the smartphone.

While AR is currently in a development stage, we expect bigger giants such as Amazon and Flipkart to build their platforms on AR and Tango, further allowing consumers to shop from home without missing out on the actual experience. Although the 3300mAh battery is good enough for getting through the day with regular browsing, AR apps will make you rush to the charger often.

To wrap it up, if you looking to buy a flagship smartphone with technology from next decade, then the `49,999 priced ASUS Zenfone AR is just fine for you.
