BJP leaders sidestep key issues in meeting

- SHASHI BHUSHAN

The two-day state executive meeting of the Delhi BJP turned out to be a futile exercise with the leadership avoiding discussing key issues.

Members of the executive alleged that there was no mention of the party’s humiliating defeat in Bawana Assembly bypolls and that of RSS affiliated ABVP in the Dusu elections. Some leaders also raised the issue of garbage in the city. However, no concrete decision was taken to clear the mess. BJP had promised to make Delhi garbage free in 100 days after winning the municipal elections in April this year.

“A party functionary raised questions about the functioning of BJP-ruled municipal bodies. He

asked what had been done by the corporations to make the city garbagefree in the first 100 days after the civic polls as promised by the party. But no discussion was taken up,” he added.

Sources said that one of the Delhi BJP vice-presidents suggested making concrete action plan about sanitation in addition to making the city garbage free.

“One of the district presidents from Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari’s constituency asked what has been done to provide thali at `10 to citizens. No discussion took place on the issues raised,” they added.

A party insider said that the whole exercise looks like fulfilling the mandatory norms of calling a meeting every three months and nothing more.

It was also observed that several senior leaders either skipped the meeting or attended for some time just to mark their presence. A party leader said that the Union minister and party LS member from Chandni Chowk, Dr Harsh Vardhan, and the Lok Sabha member from Northwest Delhi, Dr Udit Raj, skipped the two-day state executive meet.

“Former Delhi BJP president and Union minister Vijay Goel attended the meeting for an hour on the last day,” said the party insider.
