Y.C. Modi appointed NIA chief, Misra new SSB DG

The Centre has appointed senior IPS officer Y.C. Modi as the new chief of the National Investigat­ion Agency.

Mr Modi, who was also part of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigat­ion Team that investigat­ed the 2002 Gujarat riot cases, will succeed Sharad Kumar, who will complete his tenure on October 30.

The NIA is the country’s premiere investigat­ing agency that deals with all aspects of terror-related cases. Mr Modi will remain NIA’s director till his retirement on May 31, 2021, and will take over as the officer on special duty in the NIA with immediate effect to ensure a smooth transition.

He is a 1984 batch IPS officer of the AssamMegha­laya cadre and is posted as the special director in CBI.

Earlier the government had given two extensions to Mr Kumar to handle important investigat­ions like the Pathankot terror case, terror attacks in Kashmir, Burdwan blast case as well as the Samjhauta blast cases.

The Appointmen­ts Committee of the Cabinet also cleared the appointmen­t of another senior IPS officer, Rajni Kant Misra, as the new director general of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Mr Misra will remain as DG till his retirement on August 31, 2019. An officer of the 1984 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, he is presently serving as additional DG of the Border Security Force (BSF).
