A 24-year-old inebriated man went on a rampage with a shaving blade, slashing five people at a neighbourhood in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri area on Sunday night.

The man also ended up injuring himself with the blade when people tried to restrain him. The violence ended when angry people started thrashing the man before handing him over to the police.

The accused has been identified as Shubham, a native of Jalaun in Uttar Pradesh. He works at a factory in Mangolpuri’s industrial area and lives in a rented accommodation in the same area.

According to DCP (Outer Delhi) MN Tiwari, the problem began when a sloshed Shubham visited a cigarette kiosk in his neighbourhood on Sunday night.

The shop owner, 64-yearold Babulal, took one look at the inebriated Shubham and turned him away as he did not have change for `500 that he offered to purchase a tobacco product.

Shubham allegedly picked up a fight with the kiosk owner over this issue. When he tried to get physically violent, locals intervened and forced Shubham to back off.

The police rushed a total of six persons, including Shubham, to a nearby hospital. One of them also underwent a surgery

“The accused left the spot at that time, but soon returned with a shaving blade and attacked the shopkeeper, his wife and son,” said the DCP.

Shubham had “a free hand” with the blade for a brief while, before other people in the neighbourhood could react. When the neighbours tried to control him, he attacked them too.

As people controlled Shubham, he turned the blade on himself. That, however, did not evoke any sympathy in those who thrashed him before a police team reached the spot and rescued him.

The police rushed a total of six persons, including the attacker, to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in the neighbourhood. One of them underwent a surgery, but the police said none of their injuries was life-threatening.

A case has been registered against Shubham and the police are waiting for him to recover before arresting him. The police said that Shubham did not have a criminal record.
