Zwederland bag top honours

Team Zwederland, (Johan Upmark and Fredick Nystrom from Sweden, and Ricco van Prooijen and Louk Verhees from Holland) emerged winners of the Naresh Tandan Trophy and `30 lakh for the team of four gold event of the 15th HCL internatio­nal bridge championsh­ip that concluded here on Sunday.

The Mohini Tandan Trophy and `12 lakh prize money for the winners of team of four silver event was won by Team A. K. Bose (Abhijit Kumar Bose, Shantanu Ghosh, Anindya Bhattachar­ya, Soumya Das, Sayantan Kushari and Sagnik Roy), while the the Neena Bonarji Trophy and Rs 10 lakh for the Open pairs event was topped by Simon Hult and Ekenberg from Sweden

Guy Mendes de Leon and Veri Kiljan from the Netherland­s took the honours in the IMP pairs and `2 lakhs; while winners of IMP pairs strata II, Janak Shah and Avi Medhekar and Swiss pairs toppers Hila Levi and Adi Asulin from Israel won `75,000, each.

In all, a sum of `1.8 crore ($27,000) was on offer at the sixday championsh­ip.

World billiards champion and the co-founder of Olympic Gold Quest, Geet Sethi, gave away the prizes.

Speaking on the occasion, Kiran Nadar, director of HCL Corporatio­n and captain of Team Formidable­s said, “Playing bridge has been widely acknowledg­ed as having positive benefits in terms of inculcatin­g strategic thinking, building camaraderi­e and long-term partnershi­ps. Over the years, we have seen the championsh­ip grow tremendous­ly and it was a delight to have participat­ion from 800 players.”
