Crime branch forms squads to curb crime

Delhi police has reorganise­d the crime branch in a bid to reduce crime and keep a hawk’s eye on hardcore criminals who allegedly create fear amongst citizens.

The squads will also keep the city’s entry and exit points under constant surveillan­ce.

In this regard, the police has constitute­d special investigat­ion unit (SIU), inter border gangs investigat­ion squad (IGIS), special team for active robbers and snatchers (STARS) and special operation squad (SOS).

These squads have been directed to take immediate action if they get a tip off about any crime in any district, according to police sources.

According to a police officer, the main reason behind the constituti­on of the squads was to prioritise the security in the city and also tighten the noose on rising crime. The teams will also keep an eye out for white-collar crimes.

According to police sources, the crime branch has also identified several areas in north west, Rohini, south west, and outer district where they have found that violent crimes, including shooting down people and then fleeing the spot, have become rampant. “These districts are close to the border areas from where most criminals enter, commit crimes and return back,” said a police source.

The crime branch has also started compiling the data of criminals and thieves, who are active. Street crime is another area where the teams will be focusing the most constantly.

Recently, a police team arrested a person who was involved in as many as 14 snatching cases in south-west Delhi.

“If we receive complaints about such and such a crime, we will take immediate action,” a police officer said.

According to police sources, the squads have been directed to keep tabs especially on national capital region (NCR), which is infamously known as the hotbed of criminals.
