Acting on lieutenant-governor Anil Baijal’s direction, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has developed theme-based beautification at spaces underneath flyovers at 12 different locations identified for improvement. Mr Baijal, in one of the inspections, directed senior officers of SDMC to undertake an exercise for improvement of the spaces under flyovers along Ring Road.

According to a senior SDMC official, after detailed joint survey by the officers of engineering and horticulture departments, it was observed that the improvement in the form of construction of boundary wall along with grill, pathways, improved modern type of grassing, shrubs, fixing of sculptures, comfortable benches and attractive entry points were required.

“Before undertaking the execution of works, a major challenge was the eviction of unauthorised occupants who had made the areas filthy by urinating or defecating in open, removal of the parked vehicles and other encroachments. After the eviction of the unauthorized occupants, the actual execution of works was taken up at a fast pace. All the works have been completed in a period of 30-40 days,” he said. The flyovers where the spaces underneath have been transformed are Lajpat Nagar Flyover (Ring Road), South Extension (Ring Road), Savitri Flyover (Outer Ring Road), Africa Avenue Flyover (Outer Ring Road), Sarai Kale Khan Flyover (Ring Road), Nehru Place Flyover (Outer Ring Road), Kalkaji Flyover (Opposite Kalkaji Mandir), Bijwasan Flyover, Palam Flyover, Tilak Nagar Flyover, Mayapuri Flyover (Ring Road) and Raja Garden Flyover (Ring Road). Most of these flyovers belong to the PWD.

All the flyovers had a different theme to depict such as ‘Make in India’, ‘Yoga’, ‘Meditation’, ‘Wildlife’, ‘Children Park’ and ‘Teachings of Gandhi Ji’. “L-G Baijal has congratulated SDMC staff for the good work executed which has brought much needed development and appears pleasing to the eye. He has also directed more such work,” the officer added.
