2 J&K cops held for arms supply to Hizb

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday arrested two of its constables on charges of supplying live rounds of ammunition to militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen through an over-ground worker in Shopian district.

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday arrested two of its men on charges of supplying live rounds of ammunition to the militant outfit, Hizb-ulMujahedi­n, through an over ground worker (OGW) in the southern Shopian district.

According to police sources, the OGW who has been identified as Aadil Ahmed has also been arrested.

During interrogat­ion by the security personnel, Mr Ahmed admitted to working for the Hizbul-Mujahedin and also that he was supplied with the ammunition of AK47 assault rifle by the policemen, identified as Shabir Ahmed Malik and Nazir Ahmed.

The two policemen were currently posted in Ganderbal district and Shopian, respective­ly, the sources said.

The sources further said that on October 9 a police party deployed at a makeshift checkpoint set up near Shopian’s Circuit House saw a youth moving in the area in suspicious circumstan­ces.

When he was stopped by the security personnel and frisked, as many as 25 (a report even said 40), live rounds of the AK 47 assault rifle were found in his possession.

The police quickly took him into taken into custody and then extensivel­y interrogat­ed him at a security base.

According to sources, the Hizb-ul-Mujahedin ground worker has also admitted that the ammunition was given to him through a friend and that the same was to be handed over to militants as they are running short of ammunition.

Confirming the duo has been detained, DGP S.P. Vaid said that “"They have not been arrested yet. They are being questioned.”
