KEEP THOSE ‘LINES’ IN ‘CHECK’

The recent Fashion Weeks have seen the remergence of this stiff fabric. Plaid is back in vogue and some of our top Bollywood stars are endorsing the same

Year after year we have seen new trends being introduced to the fashion world. This season plaid seems to rule the ramp.

The trend was all over the recently held Fashion Weeks, where celebrities and movie stars occupy front row seats to root for their favourite designers. So we can naturally assume that our celebrities will sport trends that are introduced at these events. The plaid trend has been sported by celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza and Priyanka Chopra.

Designer Ranjitha Sundar says, “Fashion is a cycle. Plaid and checks are coming back into fashion. Everywhere we can see people sporting plaids and checks. Designers are playing around with lot of lines, checks and plaids. Plaids are generally thicker compared to other fabrics because it includes a lot of thick threads, yarns and fibres which tend to give extra texture on the fabric.”

She also suggests that while winter collections have always been plain, that is not the case now.

“Ever since plaid has come back in vogue, we can now see a lot of sweater, sweat shirts and basically winter wear in plaids. The season now is autumn/winter so we are inviting designers to work with plaids as we are quite bored with plain winter wear,” adds Ranjitha.

Plaid fabrics are quite bold. So, when sporting a look that has plaid element, it is important to know how to style it. Overdoing it can ruin the overall appearance of the outfit. “We can always do a contempory take on the plaid weave when we want to incorporate it in Indian clothing. Crop tops in a plaid weave with a floral Banaras skirt, with parted hair and a ponytail, will give very fresh take to the overall outfit,” says designer Prachita Devi. She goes on to explain, “There are no rules to follow and it only depends on what suits your body type. Plaid is a stiff material so anything that you wear should be structured in form.”

When putting together an outfit, all components should go well together. Accessorising can give the outfit a whole different perspective. “The plaid is a very unique fabric. It is very stiff and is of very high quality. So when accessorising for such a fabric, people should style it with a light weight silk scarf or a fur neck line. High boots and stockings will also go well with plaid outfits, states designer Aparna Shadab.

She concludes by saying, “Jewellery wise I don’t think it is necessary to accessorise this trend, but if people want to accessorise they should go for antique gold or silver jewellery.”
