Congress demands resignation of Guj CM

- AGE CORRESPONDENT NEW DELHI, 29. OCT

The Congress on Sunday demanded the resignation of the Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani over the deaths of children in Ahmedabad civil hospital.

At least 18 newborns died at Ahmedabad’s prestigious civil hospital over the last three days.

Nine of these took place within a day. Of the total 18 deaths reported in the last three days, nine took place on Saturday. Five of them, who died on Saturday, were referred to Ahmedabad’s civil hospital from other smaller facilities while four of the babies were born at the government-run hospital itself.

Congress spokesman Jaiveer Shergill said “There is blood on the hands of the state government and an independent judicial enquiry should be setup to bring the guilty to book.”

He further alleged that the chief superintendent M.M. Prabhakar, of the civil hospital, was a BJP ticket aspirant from the Aswara constituency for the upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat. He “is busy serving the ruling BJP government”, while a cover-up has begun to protect the accused involved, said sources.

Mr. Shergill further added that the Prime Minister should have mentioned about the deaths in his Mann Ki Baat that aired on Sunday. He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah should be held accountable and answerable for the frequent deaths of infants all over India especially Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.”

The Congress had demanded answers from Mr Modi while the party had sought resignations of senior functionaries of the government.
