YouTube flags down phone ads
Apple’s new flagship, the iPhone X has been the centre of the entire buzz as the company started shipping the device to customers on November 3. As the ‘Super Flagship’ made its way to the markets it was now time for YouTubers to flood the platform with videos showing hands-on, unboxing, or tests with the new model. But this didn’t go how the YouTubers planned it, as some popular channels discovered that their videos have suddenly been demonetised, meaning they aren’t generating any revenues for the channel with few or no ads displayed whatsoever.
Popular YouTuber, Marques Brownlee aka MKBHD, Jonathan Morrison (TLD), Safwan Ahmedmia (SuperSaf), and Casey Neistat have also confirmed that the ads aren’t showing on their iPhone X videos because YouTube flagged them as ‘not suitable for most advertisers.’
Google is yet provide a clear answer for why some iPhone X videos are being demonetised. Apple fans have already started speculating this as a conspiracy in order to drive more attention towards Google’s Pixel 2. While there’s no concrete evidence that this is the reason and it can hardly be a method to boost sales of the Pixel 2, the YouTube guidelines don’t seem to provide a good explanation on why the videos got demonetised:
“If the content of a video you uploaded is identified as not suitable for advertisers, you’ll see a yellow dollar sign next to the video. You’ll also get an email to the address associated with your YouTube account,” Google explains that videos could be flagged if they aren’t “considered suitable for all brands” or they do not meet the criteria for advertiserfriendly content.
