CBI files case on volleyball body
The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry ( PE) against the Volleyball Federation of India ( VFI) to probe the alleged irregularities and expenditure of funds by its office bearers.
According to sources, the agency is also scrutinising the details pertaining to expenses incurred by a former chief executive officer ( CEO) of the federation. In addition, the agency is also probing the documents pertaining to the expenses incurred by a former secretary general of the federation.
Meanwhile, the CBI recently initiated a preliminary enquiry against several cricketers and athletes of Odisha for allegedly manipulating their age records. Sources said the inquiry initiated by its sports integrity unit has identified around 30 sportsmen from Odisha with regard to alleged age record frauds. Sources further said that the sportsmen allegedly manipulated their respective date of birth and submitted forged documents as age proofs to ensure selection in Cuttack- A and Cuttack- B teams for the Under- 19 district cricket tournament, 2016.
Sources said that details of the athletic competitions, in which the manipulation allegedly took place, are being probed. A preliminary enquiry was registered against 30 sportsmen and other unknown players.
Recently, the Table Tennis Federation of India ( TTFI) banned three national level players ( Under- 17 and 18 categories) for two years and another player for one year for allegedly fudging their age records. The TTFI decision came after the sports integrity unit of the agency, which probed the matter after receiving complaints, found that four players had reportedly forged their birth certificates.
In a bid to eradicate corruption and matchfixing in sports, the CBI formed a specialised unit to handle cases related to sports fraud and illegal betting. The unit, sources said, also co- ordinates with other law enforcement agencies of the world apart from liaising with sports federations and state police forces to check the menace of match- fixing and other corrupt practices in sports.
