AAP govt releases additional funds of 442 cr to MCDs `

The Delhi government on Thursday approved an additional fund of ` 442.78 crore for payment to sanitation workers of the three municipal corporatio­ns. A deciasion to this effect was taken at a Cabinet meeting, chaired by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The move comes a day after a delegation of sanitation workers under the aegis of ‘ Swachhta Karamchari Union’ met Mr Kejriwal and apprised him of the financial problems being faced by sanitation workers of MCDs.

“Approving the additional funds, the Cabinet said that the funds should be utilised only to make payments to safai karamchari­s, including their salaries,” the government said in a statement.

An official said that the funds were released for the betterment of sanitation workers, who were alll along complainin­g of not getting salaries and pensions from their respective corporatio­ns.

Mr Kejriwal expressed surprise the ‘ safai karamchari­s’ were facing financiall problems though government paid the MCDs much more than in previous years.

In 2013- 14, the EDMC got ` 287.72 crores against ` 948 crores in 2016- 17. Similarly, the NDMC received ` 808.77 crores in 2013- 14 compared to ` 1,318.26 crores in 2016- 17.
