Samsung patents in- screen fingerprint scanner

Samsung seems to be having some big plans for its next year’s flagship smartphone — Galaxy S9, stored under its secret crown. But now the South Korean giant’s effort to develop an underscreen fingerprint sensor is no more a secret.

As per the report by LetsGoDigital, Samsung back in April filled in a new patent application to the World Intellectual Property Organisation ( WIPO) for a display with the fingerprint scanner underneath. The company has also received the conformation this month.

The patent suggests that the Galaxy S9 might have up to 12 pressure points on the whole screen for the fingerprint, ensuring the new tech will read your fingerprint from almost anywhere on the display.

According to patent, the pressure sensor will be positioned on the bottom, underneath the display panel of the device.

Samsung also plans to tweak its software according to the new technology and make it more convenient for the users. The pressure sensor will restrict access to private images in Gallery app icon. For instance, if the authentication is successful, the phone will open Gallery app with the private photos. If it isn’t, only a certain amount of photos will be visible to the user. The same idea will be applied to its native messaging app.

The idea also indicates the possibility of a truly bezel- less device. A series of Samsung patents dated May 2017 show how the company will develop such a phone by bending the screen 180 degrees and stretching it up to the rear panel of the phone. Besides, the South Korean giant is also reportedly working on a foldable smartphone, codenamed as Galaxy X. The expected launch of the phone is in question, since Samsung has a lot planned for 2018.
