A Silicon Valley start- up has developed a new generation of selfies. Bellus3D is showing off a face- scanning solution for Android smartphones and tablets at the CES 2018 in Las Vegas.

Bellus3D Face Camera Pro is a 3D face scanning camera that is designed for self- scanning. Users just have to attach the Face Camera Pro to a smartphone or a tablet, turn their head from left to right, and start creating 3D face models.

Bellus3D Face Camera Pro combines two proprietary technologies that measure 500,000 3D points on user’s face to create a high- resolution face model. The scanned model can further be used to fit a statistical face model for face recognition, analysis, and animation.

DepthShape recostructs 3D shape using an infrared structuredlight depth camera designed for close range scanning at up to 0.4 mm resolution with submillimeter accuracy.

PhotoShape leverages mobile device’s frontfacing camera to capture face details such as skin pores and wrinkles. An optional LED ring light ensures user’s face is captured with favourable lighting and colour every time.

Bellus3D Face Camera Pro is a small add- on camera designed to work with existing Android mobile devices. The Face Camera Pro is connected to and powered by the USB port of your mobile device. The camera data are streamed to the mobile device for processing to create 3D face models.

Bellus3D’s technology automatically calibrates and registers the Face Camera Pro’s builtin depth sensor with the mobile device’s camera every time user scans a face. As the mobile quality and resolution imp- rove, the scanning quality of the Face Camera Pro improves too.

The Bellus3D Face Camera Pro and the Android SDK are now available in limited quantity to developers and partners. Production and delivery of the device will start in early 2018.
