NEW DELHI, JAN. 22

Union science and technology minister, Dr Harsh Vardhan on Monday inaugurated East Delhi Municipal Corporation’s ( EDMC) project of conversion of incandescent streetlights and semi high mast lights into the LEDs.

Inaugurating the project, Dr Vardhan said that today was a historic day for the EDMC. It was no secret that the corporation was going through a financial crisis and initiation of this project to convert all streetlights and semi high mast lights into LED ones was commendable step indeed.

Dr Vardhan highlighted the probable dangers of global warming and climate change and said that adopting LED lights is a small step in mitigating the harm.

He later inaugurated the project in Geeta Colony through a remote control in the auditorium of the municipal corporation’s headquarters.

EDMC commissioner Dr Ranbir Singh said that this project will not lead to any additional cost to the Corporation as the entire expenditure of maintenance of these new lights will be borne by the agency for seven years who has been awarded the contract for the same on the ESCO model.

Dr Singh informed that there were as many as one lakh streetlights and 2,800 semi high mast lights that will be converted into LED lights. “The project would save cost on maintenance of streetlights apart from being environment- friendly. The entire project would be completed within nine months,” Dr Singh added.

EDMC addl commissioner G. L. Meena said the project would lead to energy savings of 77.97 per cent in comparison to existing energy bills, out of it, 13.5 per cent will be EDMC’d share. The project is being handled by ‘ Smart LED Lighting Solution’ agency.
