SCrejects plea for SIT probe into court violence
The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition to order SIT to probe into violence at Patiala court in 2016 when Kanhaiya Kumar was produced in the court in a criminal case slapped on him.
Even as counsel P. Bhushan pressed for the probe, Justice Ranjan Gogoi sitting with Justice R. Banumathi said, “some students and journalists were beaten up two years ago. We had passed some orders. We are not going to order any enquiry into it. We don’t want to flag a dead horse back to life” When Mr. Bhushan appearing for the Petitioner Kamini Jaiswal said that no action was taken by police, Justice Gogoi said “You go and file an FIR. You can approach authorities concerned for remedy.”
The petitioner besides seeking a probe into the violence in court campus also wanted a probe by a special investigation team into the contents of a sting operation conducted by two television channels exposing the role of three lawyers in the assault of JNU student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar when he was produced in the Patiala court on February 17, 2016.
The petitioner sought initiation of contempt of court proceedings against the three lawyers, Vikram Singh Chouhan, Yashpal Singh and O. P. Sharma. The petition said there was complete inaction of the Delhi police, which has been exposed by the report of the SC appointed six- member panel.
