The police has arrested the mastermind of the Naraina encounter, which took place just two days ahead of Republic Day. The police said that the accused had opened fire and injured a police subinspector when he flagged their car down at Brar Square on January 23.

According to the police, Ajay, alias Sanjay, had been in Bhondsi jail in Gurgaon in relation to another case and he was released on January 15. He has 18 others criminal cases registered against him in Delhi and Gurgaon.

The police said that it was following a gang of carjackers on January 23 when a police vehicle stopped a Swift Dzire car of carjackers at Brar Square. When one of the officials displayed his identity card to the occupants of the car and asked them to prove their credentials, they suddenly opened fire at the police officer. One of the bullets hit the team leader, a subinspector, on his thigh. By the time other police officials reacted, the occupants of the said car had managed to flee from the spot.

According to a senior official, the accused was supposed to appear at Saket Court on February 2 as he was involved in several carjacking cases. Swinging into action and without wasting any time, police laid a trap around Saket Court. At about 1.00 pm, a man came out of the court covering his face. On sensing the presence of police, he tried to escape. However, he could not dodge the alert police team and was immediately taken into custody for interrogation.

He told the police that he used to work as a taxi driver and came in contact with some auto- lifters. He forayed into the world of crime by delivering stolen cars to far off places like Kerala and Tamil Nadu for which he received good money from the autolifters. Gradually, he also began stealing cars and formed his own gang of auto- lifters. He was arrested several times in relation to carjacking cases and was sent to Tihar and Bhondsi jail, where he came in contact with other bigger criminals.
