Punjab Univ. thump Utkal, Sambalpur win

Punjab University, Chandigarh, hammered Utkal University, Bhubaneswa­r, 11- 2 in a Pool C match of the 25th Nehru all India inter- university hockey tournament at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in the capital on Sunday.

Punjab University were ahead 6- 2 at half time and weren’t in much trouble throughout the match, scoring 10 field goals.

Harmanpree­et Singh was their star, scoring a hat- trick ( 21st, 24th, 47th minutes) while Lovejeet Singh ( 35th, 67th) and Sumeetpal Singh ( 68th, 70th) also impressed.

The other goals were scored by Joginder Singh ( ninth), Jasdeep Singh ( 20th), Inderjit Singh ( 25th), Ravideep Singh ( 45th).

Sachin Munj ( third) and Santosh Sahu ( 33rd) were the scorers for Utkal University.

In the second match of the day, University of Madras, Chennai, edged past MD University, Rohtak, 4- 3 in Pool D.

UoM led 2- 1 at the break. V. Veeratha Mizan ( 19th, 57th) netted a brace for the winning team. G. Saravana Kumar ( second) and T. Arun Kumar ( 48th) were the other scorers for UoM.

Deepak ( ninth), Mohit ( 56th) and Vikas ( 62nd) responded for MD University.

In Pool D’s second match, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, overpowere­d Shivaji University, Kolhapur, 6- 3, riding on P. Subramanya­m’s four goals ( 43rd, 47th, 57th, 65th).

T. Venkatesh ( 20th) and B. Sai Vineeth ( 46th) were ANU’s other scorers.

In Pool C, Sambalpur University thrashed Pune’s Savitri Bai Phule University 7- 1 courtesy Sanjay Xalxo’s hattrick ( 46th, 59th, 67th).

Anugraha Kujur ( 54th, 56th), Nitesh Majhi ( second), Alok Barla ( 20th) were also on target for the winning side.
