In what doctors said was no less than a miracle, a pregnant woman who was critically injured during the ongoing armed standoff at Sunjwan Army station in Jammu on Sunday delivered a baby girl following a caesarean.

Rifleman Nazir Ahmed’s wife had received a bullet wound in her lower back in the militant firing. Her husband was also injured in the shooting and both were immediately rushed to the Military Hospital at Satwari in Jammu.

“The 35- week pregnant lady was immediately evacuated and rushed to the military hospital where the doctors attended to her bullet injury and subsequently a C- section was performed on her,” said a defence spokesman. She delivered a baby girl weighing 2.5 kg and both mother and child are said to be safe and healthy, the spokesman added.

Army officials said that the woman had tried to protect herself and took shelter during the attack, but became a victim to the bullets fired by the militants.
