FOCUSED ON MY JOB, SAYS CORO

- UTKARSH KRISHAN

The Indian Super League has grown bigger and better since its inception in 2014, and much of the fanfare is fuelled by quality goalscorers.

FC Goa’s Ferran Corominas is on top of the elite list. With 13 goals in as many games, the Spaniard has taken to the ISL like a duck to water.

The leading contender for this season’s golden boot has broken several records.

With three hat- tricks including the fastest ever in the ISL history, against Kerala Blasters, the Espanyol academy graduate has already scored more goals in the league stage of the season than anyone — setting a new bar in the tournament.

“The aim is obviously to help my team win and I just focus on the job I have been given to do,” the 35year- old said.

With Goa are sixth with five games to play in their search for a play- off spot, Coro, as he is fondly known, relishes the challenge the ISL poses.

“I see this league as a very competitive one. Teams have scored a lot of goals this year. But when it comes down to final details, that’s what I believe will make the difference,” he quipped.

Coro looks back on his career at Espanyol with fondness, where he made 165 appearances in 10 seasons with the Catalonian club. He won the Copa del Ray in 2006 and was a part of the Uefa Cup squad that finished runner- up a year later.

Coro best remembers centre- back Dani Jarque, who was the club captain and voice of authority in a dressing room that yearned for leadership.

Jarque passed away aged 26 in 2009 from a heart- attack but left a lasting mark on him.

“Dani was not just someone I played with. He was my room mate and the guy with whom I spent time throughout my Espanyol and Spain junior division teams.”
