Something wrong with SIT probe on Manipur killings: SC
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday expressed its displeasure over the progress of CBI’s SIT in probing alleged extra- judicial killings by the Army, Assam Rifles and the police in Manipur and said something was ‘ terribly wrong’. The apex court asked the National Human Rights Commission to depute 3 persons to associate with the SIT to carry out investigations in 17 of the 42 cases.
Case of “tamed” elephant Sonu has reached supreme court with a wildlife activist filing special leave petition ( SLP) seeking the baby pachyderm’s release in the forest.
This was the first of its kind plea for seeking “freedom” of a wild elephant, being heard by the apex court.
Sonu, declared as ‘ rogue’ by the state forest department for going rampage in villages situated in the vicinity of the Achanakmar Tiger Reserve in Bilashpur district of Chhattisgarh, has been held in captivity in the elephant rescue centre set up in the forest ever since it was captured on December one, 2018.
Sonu had suffered grievous injuries in its legs for being chained to a tree for months together while being kept in captivity along with three other elephants in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve. His woes have moved wildlife activist Nitin Singhvi to move the Chhattisgarh high court in July 2016.
