Shocked at what I saw in Rakhine: Boris

-

Bangkok, Feb. 12: After visiting Myanmar, British foreign secretary Boris Johnson met on Monday with Prime Minister Prayuth Chan- ocha in Thailand and both discussed Myanmar’s persecution of ethnic Rohingya Muslims and plans for elections in Thailand to end military rule.

In Myanmar, Mr Johnson visited areas in the western state of Rakhine, the site of the violence that drove the Rohingya to flee. “Shocked at what I saw during tour of northern # Rakhine,” he wrote on Twitter. “The devastation of hundreds of villages torched. UK already a major donor to crisis and will continue to use our influence to provide a better future for the # Rohingya community.”

After meeting Suu Kyi in Yangon, he told BBC: “To be honest, I don’t really think she understands the full horror. I don’t think she has been up in a helicopter to see what we have seen. I believe in her leadership but am sad to see what is happening to Burma now.”
