Punjab, Utkal universities win
Chandigarh’s Punjab University notched up their second win, defeating Acharya Naraguna University of Guntur 4- 0 in Pool C of the Fitness World 25th Nehru all India inter- university men’s hockey tournament at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in the capital on Tuesday. Inderjit Singh, Sumeetpal Singh, Jasdeep Singh and Joginder Singh were the goal- scorers.
In another Pool C match, Bhubaneswar’s Utkal University thrashed Shivaji University of Kolhapur 6- 3. Sachin Minj and Biswajit Dalai had a double each for the winners and were aided by goals from Santosh Sahu and Sidhant Rout.
Rohtak’s MD University edged past Sambalpur University 3- 2 in a Pool D match.
Mohit opened the scoring for MD University, Rohtak, and the team held on to the lead in the first half. Vikas added to MD University’s lead in the 40th minute with a field strike before Sambalpur University put up a fight. Sanjay Xalxo made it 2- 1 in the 62nd minute, while Uttam consolidated Rohtak team’s lead in the 68th. The Sambalpur boys continued to fight back and pulled off a last minute goal through Anugraha Kujur, but that was as close as they could come.
In the day’s last match, University of Madras got the better of Savitrabai Phule University, Pune, by a 5- 4 margin in a match that saw end- to- end action.
