Sikh’s turban tugged at in UK racial attack

London, Feb. 22: A Sikh environmental activist on a visit to the UK from India has filed a complaint with Scotland Yard after his turban was tugged at by a white man shouting “Muslim go back” during a racist attack outside the Parliament.

Ravneet Pal Singh, 37, South Asia project manager for EcoSikh, was in the security queue to enter Portcullis House — an extension of the House of Commons complex in Westminster — when a man targeted him on Wednesday. The “white Anglo Saxon man” spoke a language other than English but Mr Singh was able to discern the words “Muslim” and “go back” before the attacker ran away.

“I am not sure why he was shouting and why he attacked my turban. I was able to prevent my turban coming off and he ran away when I shouted back but it was an extremely distressing experience,” said Mr Singh. “The police said the incident has been recorded on CCTV and that they will find the attacker,” he said.

London, Feb. 22: A 37year- old Sikh’s turban was ripped by a white man shouting “Muslim go back” outside the UK parliament, according to a media report.

Ravneet Singh, who is from Punjab, was waiting to enter the Portcullis House, part of the British Parliamentary Estate, to meet Sikh Labour MP Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi when the assault took place on Wednesday.

Mr Singh said he was waiting in the queue when the man, who was shouting “Muslim go back”, approached him and tried to remove his turban. “I was in the queue outside Portcullis House and this guy ran up to us. Just before we got to the entrance he came up to me and attacked me. “He was pulling at my turban strongly. It half moved and I grabbed it. Before he could do anything else I shouted at him and he ran,” Mr Singh was quoted as saying.

Mr Singh said the man made a “racist comment” in another language that he did not understand.

“He was a white man, but he didn’t sound English,” he added.

Dhesi, who was to host Singh, expressed “disgust” at the incident and sought action against the culprit.
