- AGE CORRESPONDENT

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation ( SDMC) will become the first civic body in the country to replace ICE vehicles by evehicles to make Delhi clean by putting a break in the city’s pollution levels.

Union minister of power, new and renewable energy R. K. Singh during the launch of the national e- mobility programme handed over the keys of the first E- vehicle to SDMC commissioner Puneet Kumar Goel.

After the launch of the emobility programme, the SDMC has received its first fleet of 32 e- vehicles and the remaining 43 will be delivered soon by the Energy Efficiency Services Ltd ( EESL)

Dr Goel described the SDMC’s step as “driving into the future in the direction of developing a Clean Delhi and contributing to sustainable environment. We have started the process of allotting these vehicles to the concerned officer. We are ushering in an era of clean, green and future oriented technologies in Delhi”.

The e- cars are similar to a Sedan automatic type, fully air- conditioned with zero tail pipe emission.

The new vehices will result in huge savings in fuel consumption, maintenance and operating costs of the vehicle and drasticallty reduce CO2 emission, he added.

The advantage that electric cars have over conventional fuel- powered cars is the low running cost.

There is a considerable difference in the cost of the input power or fuel required to run an electric vehicle and a conventional fuel- powered vehicle. Assuming that a vehicles runs for 1,600 km per month, an electric vehicle saves approximately 64,000 per year.

“As far as savings in the fuel consumption and other costs, including operating and maintenance cost, the corporation is likely to register a reduction of more than 2,100 tonnes of CO2 annually and save more than 1.65 lakh litres of fuel every year
