Twitter promises to make ‘ blue ticks’ more common

Twitter is planning to offer blue tick verificati­on marks for more of its users soon. The company’s CEO Jack Dorsey has revealed this in Periscope live stream recently. He said that they are working on a new process in identity verificati­on of the users.

“The intention is to open verificati­on to everyone,” Dorsey said. “And to do it in a way that’s scalable, where we’re not in the way and people can verify more facts about themselves, and we don’t have to be the judge or imply any bias on our part.”

The company held the verificati­on process last November after it was alleged for verifying a white supremacis­t, later the Twitter product director David Gasca had admitted that the verificati­on process is “broken” on the platform. After which a team has been allotted to rethink the working of its current verificati­on system.

The basic ideology of the verificati­on ticks was to identify the difference between the real and parody accounts, which later had been differenti­ated as a status symbol and popularity for celebritie­s and wellknown people globally. This is a problem and needs to be changed said the CEO.

“In user research, when you ask people what do you think when you see the checkmark, they think of it as credibilit­y,” Gasca said, joining Dorsey for the live broadcast. “Like, Twitter stands behind this person … Twitter believes what they’re saying something great and authentic, which is not at all what we mean by the checkmark. So it creates a lot of confusion.”

However, the company didn’t specify the details about the exact process of how the verificati­on needs to be done. But has mentioned that future of verificati­on may look to ‘ increase context’, to help users to portray their message based on who they are.
