POSE AROUND IN A PONCHO

IT’S LOOSE, BREEZY, AIRY, SUPER COMFORTABLE. IT IS A PERFECT GARMENT PIECE THAT CAN BE WORN IN MULTIPLE WAYS

- RUTH PRARTHANA

Ponchos have been predicted to take over the capes and crop tops that have been ruling the fashion world for some time now. This loose, breezy and airy trend has had designers pairing them with all kinds of Indian outfits. They have been worn as saree blouses, as well as with lehengas and long skirts. Ponchos, due to their flowy nature, are perfect for this hot summer season. They have been worn by actresses like Sonakshi Sinha, Sonam Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.

A fashion trend is called a classic because it never runs out of vogue. But this is not the case with a poncho. “Unlike a classic, ponchos are just a fad trend. Ponchos are like a come and go trend. They give a very cowboy feel, they are airy and breezy making them apt for summer,” explains designer Prachita Devi.

Instead of those same old prints, checks can also be tried out with ponchos. She further adds, “Draped brocade or checked dhoti pants, when worn with ponchos, give a very fresh look.” Ponchos are traditionally western pieces of clothing, but when a little sequins, crystals or embroidery is used, it becomes as Indian as it can get. Designer Monali Ranka says, “Ponchos are best suited for Indowestern looks. One can try a bustier instead of a blouse with has embellishment; a see through organza poncho that is cut at the bust and has a trail behind with detailing at the bottom can be worn on top.”

Poncho typically come flared, so some might hesitate in wearing a full volume skirt with it. But Monali explains that full volume skirts can be worn as it doesn't get in the way of a poncho. To add in the bling factor, Designer Dhanya Ram Kumar suggests, “You can wear a lehenga with a poncho shifted to the side and crystal belt to give the outfit dimension.”

While wearing this trend it is important not to go overboard. Dhanya adds, “Although they work wonders with long flared skirts, when paired with knee length flared trousers they can be disastrous.” Accessories need to be kept to the bare minimum as you don’t want to add to the drama that the poncho creates with its flowy nature. “They are a really smart trend. You can play around and experiment with different earrings. You can carry one of the box clutches or brief case clutches are the rage now and are available in a variety of patterns or even a potlis if the occasion calls for it.” suggests Monali.
