Second straight victory for Sporting

Defending champions Eastern Sporting Union’s winning goal was scored by their captain Irom Prameshwor­i in the 3rd minute

Defending champions Eastern Sporting Union clinched their second consecutiv­e win in the Hero Indian Women’s League, edging out last year’s finalists Rising Student’s Club 1- 0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Wednesday.

Captain Irom Prameshwor­i scored the solitary goal of the match, lobbing over RSU goalkeeper Tikina’s head in the 3rd minute.

ESU, on six points, attacked from the kick- off. Prameshwor­i and Kamala Devi combined well in the early stages, yielding the goal straightaw­ay.

Sporting Union defender Sweety found Roja inside the box in the 6th minute but the striker was unable to control the ball. Kamala too unleashed a shot in the 13th minute but her effort was off target.

Rising gradually made a comeback as Sanju and Lochana combined well together.

Sanju’s 23rd minute shot went narrowly wide.

Prameshwor­i and Kamala both came close to doubling Sporting’s lead but they were unable to put their effort on target.

Sporting next face India Rush SC on March 31 while Rising take on Kryhpsa on the same day. SETHU BLANK GOKULAM Sethu FC defeated Gokulam Kerala FC 2- 0 in the day’s second match, riding on goals from Sabina ( 17th) and Manisha ( 86th).

Sethu now have three points from two matches while

Gokulam are yet to open their account.

Gokulam were faster off the blocks with Fazila coming close to scoring twice in the early stages.

Sethu FC took the lead against the run of play with Bangladesh’s Sabina Khatun running down the right channel to smash home.

Gokulam’s Fazila and Sanathopki combined well but were unable to get through.

Sabina almost doubled the lead in the 37th minute but her shot was kept out by Gokulam goalkeeper Rumpa.

Sethu had a chance to double their lead in the 72nd minute but Manisha bundled her shot. She made amends in the 86th minute, converting Sabina’s pass from close range.

Sethu FC now take on Rising Student’s Club on April 2 while Gokulam face Indira Gandhi Academy SE.
