Aspiring wrestler wanted in assault case arrested

An aspiring wrestler, who was wanted in a case of assaulting excise officials, was arrested by the Delhi police. The accused was also found to be involved in smuggling liquor in Delhi. The accused had earlier participat­ed in several state level wrestling competitio­ns or dangals. According to the police, on the intervenin­g night of October 3- 4 the accused along with his seven to eight associates thrashed excise officials with iron rods and sticks. The latter were deployed in Bawana area to curb the activities of bootlegger­s. Following this, a non- bailable warrant was issued against the accused by the court. Pawan Kumar, alias Pony, attacked two policemen attached to the Delhi excise department deployed to curb the activities of the bootlegger­s. On the day of the incident, he was waiting in his private Santro car for the other team members. In the meantime, a gang of bootlegger­s, equipped with iron rods and sticks, came there and assaulted the excise officials. The accused persons broke the windshield­s of their car and thrashed them brutally. They were retaliatin­g as the excise staff regularly booked their men, vehicles, and illicit liquor. In this incident, head constable Jaibhagwan, constable Sunil Kumar, and constable Harpawan Jeet of the excise department were injured. During the course of investigat­ion, Govind, Mannu, and Naseem were arrested. New Delhi, April 17: The Delhi high court was on Tuesday informed that the Delhi Assembly secretary, whose repatriati­on to his parent department — the All- India Radio ( AIR) — had become a contentiou­s issue between the Speaker and the lieutenant­governor, has been sent back with effect from February 26. The developmen­t was communicat­ed to the high court on behalf of Speaker Ram Niwas Goel, who had been opposing the repatriati­on of House secretary Prasanna Kumar Suryadevar­a even though the then lieutenant- governor ( LG) Najeeb Jung had ordered that he be sent back to AIR. The counsel for Mr Goel also told the court that since Mr Suryadevar­a has been repatriate­d, the Speaker was not pressing the plea challengin­g the L- G’s decision to send him back. In view of the submission made on behalf of the Speaker, Justice Rajiv Shakdher dismissed the matter as not pressed.
