Pet monkey gets temple, hospital in her memory

- AMITA VERMA

Every dog has his day and so do monkeys, especially if they happen to be “crorepatis”.

“Chunmun” in Rae Bareli was one such lucky monkey.

The story of Chunmun dates back to 2002 when Sabista, a housewife, saw the monkey being harassed and beaten by some local people.

Sabista saw this and bought the monkey after paying a sum of ` 300. Sabista and her husband Brijesh Srivastava did not have a child and they loved the monkey like their own. A few weeks later, the monkey died.

The couple was distraught but one day, Sabista saw someone taking another monkey and she bought the baby monkey and named it Chunmun.

Chunmun was the apple of the couple’s eye and two years ago, the couple bequeathed all their property to Chunmun. Almost overnight, Chunmun became the owner of a house, a car, ` 20 lakh in cash, two “bighas” of land and also a residential plot of land. Chunmun

lived in an air- conditioned room with the couple and after two years, she was even “married” off.

In November last year, Chunmun died at the age of 15.

On Tuesday, Chunmun’s adopted parents installed a statue of Chunmun, made in gold, in the family temple that has statues of Lord Ram, Sita and Laxman. The temple in Shakti Nagar area has been named as Chunmun temple and the installation of the statue that resembles Bal Hanuman was done with elaborate rituals by a team of priests.

“Chunmun brought joy into our lives and she will always remain our daughter. All our property will now go into a trust named after her. We have already started a charitable clinic named ‘ Chunmun hospital’, where the poor are given free treatment,” said Sabista.
